Blender is an open source 3D content creation suite, which supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline - modelling, animation, simulation, rendering, motion tracking and game creation.   In this forum, Mr Jimmy Tsoi will share his experience on creating a 3D model of nuclear plant control room with Blender for his award-winning VR game - “Chernobyl Disaster”. He will also demonstrate how to generate multiple buildings on a tailor-made terrain in a short amount of time with particle system. This is a computer graphic technique commonly used for simulating fuzzy objects such as cloud, fire and water.

About the speaker:

Mr Jimmy Tsoi, a third year undergraduate student from the Department of Health Technology and Informatics, is fascinated by game development. He has joined the 2020/21 VR Contest organised by Pao Yue-kong Library and won the champion with his teammate. Jimmy has learnt more about scene design, 3D modelling and colour selection when developing the game.

In this seminar, Ms Isabel Kemp, a student from the Department of Computing will share how she incorporated a medication reminder in a smart watch for the elderly. Using M5Stack devices and the Blynk mobile application, the smart watch notifies them of the types and amount of medicines to take. Once the elderly patients follow suit, a record of their medical adherence will be automatically saved to Google Sheets by pressing the button on the watch. The Medication Reminder Smart Watch ensures that the medication prescribed by doctors is taken at the correct times of the day and in the correct dosages, with a monitoring system that helps keep them on track. Through this experience, Isabel has learnt more about the role technology plays in the healthcare system, and how innovative ideas and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices could benefit the lives of others.

About the speaker:

Ms Isabel Kemp, a 4th year undergraduate student from the Department of Computing majoring in Computing, is fascinated by IoT and how it helps different sectors of the community. She has participated in various workshops and student projects of MakerMindset Programme@i-Space.

Maker Mindset

What is the Maker Mindset?  What makes a Maker?

Makers have a strong curiosity about the things around them. They are curious in trying to understand how things work and have a strong desire to experiment and improve the things and situation around them.

People with Maker Mindset are self-directed learners and this is why schools are actively encouraging students to develop this maker mindset - so that students can learn from this creative process and embrace mistakes as a valuable opportunity to improve their ideas and, ultimately, themselves as individuals.

More resources for Maker Mindset:

Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a problem-solving approach for designers to reach desirable solutions to match people’s needs while emphasizing on human-centered design.

It also considers what is desirable from users’ point of view, how users will interact with products and offer a solution based on the emotional state of users. It also encourages brainstorming and especially rewards thinking out-of-the-box.

Design Thinking is not limited to designers, but is also relevant to other fields such as engineering, architecture, business, information technology, education, healthcare, law and many other professions where the process of design can be applied to either a product or a service.

The Design Thinking cycle includes Empathize, Define (the problem), Ideate, Prototype and Test, and this cycle would be useful for those who are planning to work and test on a prototype.

Here are some videos on Design Thinking:
