Internet of Things (IoT) - Real Time Weather Monitoring Station
An Internet-of-Thing (IoT) component can be configured to collect real-time environmental data. This workshop will teach you how to make a small scale weather monitoring station by integrating ESP8266 board with a temperature and humidity sensor. You could monitor the real-time and historical environmental data remotely over the cloud platform. In this workshop, you will learn:

Internet of Things (IOT), and its Sensor Simulation over Cloud Platform
The webinar introduces the connection from sensors to cloud platform. The demo hardware will be Arduino/ESP32 with programming technique by using Arduino IDE to connect with the cloud platform. Powerful Feature in cloud platform - Adafruit IO Cloud The API that drives user interface is available. The data can be stored, managed, controlled, and downloaded anytime. Charts, graphs, gauges, logging, and more features are available from anywhere in this designed web-based dashboard. Trigger function can monitor your data and notify you when your temperature sensor gets too hot or when your DIY security system goes offline. Come and Join this webinar if you are interested to build your own IoT project. In this webinar, you will learn:
About the speaker: Silas Hung is a professional electronic engineer for 25 years. He specializes in electronic engineering, material analysis and photonics analysis. He founded Cloud-LED lighting technology limited in recent years. |
Student Maker Forum: Internet of Things(IoT) - Smart Home Prototype
In this webinar, Declan Leung, a student from the Department of Computing will share how he designs the tailor-made application on Internet of Things (IoT): Smart Home Prototype. The prototype of the smart home consists of a series of IoT controllers and smart sensors. An IoT controller can automatically turn on or off electronic appliances such as air-conditioner, based on the temperature collected by environmental sensors. He has not only learned the essentials of being a professional programmer as “smart home” requires the connection between data networking and home appliance devices, but he has also taken a leading role in his IoT team project. About the student speaker: Declan Leung, a 4th year undergraduate student from the Department of Computing and pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Enterprise Information Systems. He has a strong interest in IoT, and participated in variuos workshops and student projects of MakerMindset Programme@i-Space. |

Co-curricular Achievement (CAT) Transcript |
Students who have participated in i-Space’s workshops and webinars in semester 1 (2020/21) will have their attendance recorded in the Co-curricular Achievement Transcript (CAT) issued by the Centre STARS by semester end. |
PolyU Makerthon 2021 is a 3-day ideation event exclusive to current PolyU students under the PolyU Maker Fund Programme.
The students from various disciplines gathered at i-Space, 4/F, Library from 28 to 30 May 2021 and came up with ideas and prototypes under the guidance of industry mentors. The teams shortlisted in Makerthon will enjoy prototyping fund support, one on one mentorship and direct entry to MVP & Market Validation Training.
What is the Maker Mindset? What makes a Maker?
Makers have a strong curiosity about the things around them. They are curious in trying to understand how things work and have a strong desire to experiment and improve the things and situation around them.
People with Maker Mindset are self-directed learners and this is why schools are actively encouraging students to develop this maker mindset - so that students can learn from this creative process and embrace mistakes as a valuable opportunity to improve their ideas and, ultimately, themselves as individuals.
More resources for Maker Mindset:
Design Thinking is a problem-solving approach for designers to reach desirable solutions to match people’s needs while emphasizing on human-centered design.
It also considers what is desirable from users’ point of view, how users will interact with products and offer a solution based on the emotional state of users. It also encourages brainstorming and especially rewards thinking out-of-the-box.
Design Thinking is not limited to designers, but is also relevant to other fields such as engineering, architecture, business, information technology, education, healthcare, law and many other professions where the process of design can be applied to either a product or a service.
The Design Thinking cycle includes Empathize, Define (the problem), Ideate, Prototype and Test, and this cycle would be useful for those who are planning to work and test on a prototype.
Here are some videos on Design Thinking:
