Student Maker Forum: The Journey of a Badminton Launcher Project
Join us at the upcoming Student Maker Forum at the Library’s i-Space, where two Year 3 Engineering students, WANG Wenrui and ZHOU Shumeng, will share their journey of creating an award-winning badminton launcher project. From the initial concept to the final prototype, they will discuss their design process and the mechanism behind it. They will also share the challenges they faced and the improvements they plan to make to the launcher.
About the Speakers WANG Wenrui and ZHOU Shumeng are third-year students from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) and Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) respectively. Their passion for badminton and the high cost of automatic badminton launchers in the market inspired them to create an affordable alternative. With a strong understanding of badminton launchers and a desire to enhance their technical skills, they took on the challenge of developing their own launcher. Utilising the Internet-of-Things (IoT) resources and facilities at the Digital Makerspace of the i-Space, they successfully designed a launcher that won the 1st Runner Up and Design Prize at the Microcontroller Application Design Contest (2023/24) organised by EEE.

What is the Maker Mindset? What makes a Maker?
Makers have a strong curiosity about the things around them. They are curious in trying to understand how things work and have a strong desire to experiment and improve the things and situation around them.
People with Maker Mindset are self-directed learners and this is why schools are actively encouraging students to develop this maker mindset - so that students can learn from this creative process and embrace mistakes as a valuable opportunity to improve their ideas and, ultimately, themselves as individuals.
More resources for Maker Mindset:
Design Thinking is a problem-solving approach for designers to reach desirable solutions to match people’s needs while emphasizing on human-centered design.
It also considers what is desirable from users’ point of view, how users will interact with products and offer a solution based on the emotional state of users. It also encourages brainstorming and especially rewards thinking out-of-the-box.
Design Thinking is not limited to designers, but is also relevant to other fields such as engineering, architecture, business, information technology, education, healthcare, law and many other professions where the process of design can be applied to either a product or a service.
The Design Thinking cycle includes Empathize, Define (the problem), Ideate, Prototype and Test, and this cycle would be useful for those who are planning to work and test on a prototype.
Here are some videos on Design Thinking:
