i-Space: Metaverse Contest 2023/24

Consisting of the Digital Makerspace, Digital Visualisation Room and Studios

With the support from the Department of Computing (COMP), the Metaverse contest is to provide a valuable opportunity for PolyU/CPCE students, whether individual or in teams, to showcase their innovation and creativity in utilising the Metaverse, with the goal of building immersive virtual worlds that enhance and revolutionise the way we interact, study and learn. Participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to design, and implement captivating and imaginative virtual environments. The contest will encourage thoughtful exploration of various themes, including, but not limited to, virtual community building, immersive storytelling, virtual commerce, educational experiences, gamification, virtual art and fashion, and more.

Contest Results

The award presentation ceremony for the Metaverse contest was held on 28 August 2024 in the i-Space. A total of 6 teams won prizes in the contest.

Unity Course for the potential participants of the Metaverse Contest

The course is specifically designed to assist participants to develop VR programming skill in Unity software for the Metaverse Contest.

Upon completion of this 18-hour course, participants will be able to use Unity to create a complete a game. The six sessions will cover the following topics:

  • Interacting with Unity,
  • 3D Objects in Unity,
  • Materials and Textures,
  • Light and Particle System,
  • Physics and Collision,
  • Coding in Unity,
  • Animation,
  • Audio System,
  • User Interface,
  • and How to Convert the File to the Spatial Platform.

It is generously supported by the Industrial Centre

3D Modelling and Scene Design with Blender

This beginner-friendly workshop provides an overview of Blender, a robust open-source 3D modelling tool. In this workshop, you will learn essential techniques in Blender, including view manipulation, mesh creation and sculpting, texture application, and eventually, building a furnished room and rendering the final scene.

Understanding Web3.0 and Its Impact on Our Prospects

As part of the seminar/workshop series, this seminar will delve into the intricacies of Web3.0, distinguishing it from its predecessor, Web3. Participants will explore the concepts of centralisation versus decentralisation, and whether the Metaverse is just a passing trend. The seminar will also discuss the emergence of Artificial Intelligence and Generative Content (AIGC), and its potential implications for job security. Additionally, it will touch on Blockchain technology, Tokenomics, and the policy statement on the development of Virtual Assets (VA).

About the speaker

Mr Hui Kin Sang is a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience in media, ICT and corporate management. He currently serves as the Founding President of WebX Industry Alliance, Immediate Past Chairman of the Hong Kong Computer Chamber of Commerce and Vice Chairman of HK Association of Interactive Marketing and HKIOT. Known as a "Digital Hero", Mr Hui has held senior positions in media companies in Hong Kong and Taiwan. He is actively involved in new media advertising and digital product businesses and is a columnist for the leading media in China and Hong Kong.

Mr Alex Lee is an inventor and entrepreneur with interest in semiconductors and STEM education. He had worked for high tech startups and companies in Silicon Valley, Israel, Greece, China and Hong Kong for over 30 years. In recent years, he founded EGG Technologies Limited and Alex's Workshop, which focus on designing STEM products for Hong Kong students.

Unity Workshops for Spatial IO

Two consecutive Unity workshops will be held and provide participants with the opportunity to embark on a thrilling journey of game development and explore the vast potential of the Metaverse. Join us as we delve into the world of game creation and discover how to publish your games on the Spatial IO platform.

Participants are required to attend both workshops, and upon completion of this 6-hour course, they will be able to use Unity to create a complete game. The two sessions will cover the following topics:

Workshop 1:

  • Interacting with Unity
  • Manipulating 3D Objects in Unity
  • Materials and Textures
  • Light and Particle Systems
  • Physics and Collision Mechanics

Workshop 2:

  • Coding in Unity
  • Animation
  • Converting and Optimising your Game for the Spatial Platform

Rules and Regulations

  • PolyU and CPCE students can participate in the Contest.
  • Participants  can only submit one submission individually or as a group.
  • Participants must submit their projects on the Metaverse platform such as Spatial platform.
  • The 3D models or application used in the project must be created on their own or downloaded from open or royalty-free sources.
  • The copyright of the submission belongs to the participants. However, the Organisers reserve the right to use the submission for promotional purposes. The Organiser also reserve the right to announce the names of winner, and to publish photos taken from the competition activities for promotional purposes.
  • The Organisers reserve the right to display the original or modified entries, in digital format, through online social media or physical form, for exhibition or promotion purposes.
  • Prizes are non-exchangeable, non-returnable and non-refundable in any situation.
  • The participants acknowledge that they have read and accepted the rules & regulations of the competition by submitting an entry.
  • The Organisers reserve the right to amend and/or cancel the activities as well as the Rules & Regulations without prior notice.
  • All entries must be original and have not been published in other occasions before. By submitting an entry, the participants guarantee that the entry neither contains any third party copyrighted materials nor infringes the intellectual property rights of any third parties. Participants should also be aware that the content should not include obscene, violence, religion, politics or any other inappropriate content. The Organisers reserve the right to disqualify against any entry or team that violates the rules without prior notice.
  • In case of any dispute, the Organisers reserve the right of final decision.

 

The VR application

The Library will provide HTC VIVE Pro 2, HP Reverb G2, Meta Oculus 2 and Oculus Rift for the judging panel to view and evaluate submitted Metaverse entries.

If the submissions require other platforms or device for viewing, participants must demonstrate the Metaverse to judging panel using compatible equipment or their own devices.

 

Submissions 

A PowerPoint file (with no more than 20 slides) containing the storyboard and each team member’s contributions, etc. 

A supplementary video clip (no longer than 10 minutes) demonstrating the concept and the Metaverse.

i-Space@Spatial Demo

By re-utilising the 3D model created from the VR Tour of the Library’s i-Space student project and following the Metaverse platform guideline, the Library modified and optimised the model to develop the Space within the Spatial Metaverse platform.
