The Maker Mindset Programme aims to

  • Organize creative and stimulating events and workshops for students to enhance their awareness in emerging technologies and nurture a “Can-do” mindset; and
  • Help students overcome challenges and adopt any technologies in the future.

Virtual Reality Contest’s theme talk on Latest Development of the Virtual World

 Mr Kevin Lee Ka Tsun, Founder & CEO of Redspots Creative

The development of media technology and digital entertainment has been evolving rapidly in recent years. Technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality have been getting more popular and becoming part of our daily lives. Mr Kevin Lee is going to introduce you the latest developments of these technologies and related applications, where you can experience the trends and future of the virtual world.

This workshop will give you a basic electronic concept and programming skills to setup and control an IoT device.  This workshop is suitable for students from all disciplines without any programming knowledge.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How to do basic programming on ESP32 MCU board to control device's I/O
  • How to generate data from IoT devices to aggregate and process data in Cloud service

William Kwok-on Chan is a 3rd year Undergraduate student majoring in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development and pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering. He is currently a Board Member and the Education Programme Coordinator of Wikimedia Community User Group Hong Kong, where the User Group is a recognized movement affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia Movement.

Internet of Things (IoT) applications have the potential to give an innovative solution to improve efficiency on every aspect of your daily life from collecting environmental data to establishing a smart city.  This workshop will give you a basic electronic concept and programming skills to setup and control an IoT device.  This workshop is suitable for students from all disciplines without any programming knowledge.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How to do basic programming on ESP32 MCU board to control device's I/O
  • How to generate data from IoT devices to aggregate and process data in Cloud service

Note: The i-Space will provide a ready-made M5Stack IoT device to the participants. Each IoT device may be shared by 2 to 3 participants.

Internet of Things (IoT) on Smart Planting

We will make a little smart planting machine by using Arduino board, soil moisture sensor, and servo motor to integrate a planting helper with the data upload to cloud, when you are away from home, the smart planting system will take care of your plant, and you could monitor the soil moisture condition of your plant remotely over the cloud.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How to program on ESP32 / Arduino board with Arduino IDE
  • How to handle sensor's signal between cloud network and irrigation machine

About the speaker:

Silas Hung is an electronic engineer for 25 years, other than his engineer work, he has been a part-time lecturer with VTC for over 1500 teaching hours in electronic engineering, and was an invited speaker in many engineering conference, he has published over 20 technical paper in Journals and conferences.

How would you like to create an acrylic identification tag, using a personal motto and photo of yourself?

This workshop will give you the opportunity to use a laser cutter to create your own ID tag on an acrylic board measuring 11 cm x 5 cm approximately.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How to prepare an artwork for laser fabrication
  • How to operate a laser cutter safely

Just bring along:

  • A photo of yourself
  • A short text (motto) to embed into your artwork

Mike Li

Co-founder of 3D Printed Prosthetics. This organization aims to produce 3D-printed prosthesis for underprivileged children with disabilities, and incorporates its workshops into STEM curriculum.

MakerMindset@i-Space - When Culture Meets Technology

The “Virtual Reality Contest: Stories from ancient China” organised by the Library was extended from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to secondary schools. A selection of winning entries, including Chinese Tea Culture, The Story of Qu Yuan, Mongol Siege of Diaoyu Castle, and Confucius Stranded on the Road from Chen to Cai, will be showcased in the exhibition for visitors to experience stories and fables from ancient China through immersive VR games.

科技遇上文化
圖書館舉辦的「虛擬實境創作比賽:中國古代故事」比賽,今年由香港理工大學推廣至中學。展覽展出的得獎作品包括中國茶文化、屈原傳、合州釣魚城之戰、孔子之厄於陳蔡篇等主題,參觀者可身歷其境,透過虛擬現實遊戲體驗中國古代故事和寓言。
