Digitisation is the process of converting physical materials into digital formats. The Library offers a variety of self-service digitisation tools for digitising printed materials in different formats including archives, artworks, books, and manuscripts. The digital copies created by these tools are intended for private study and research purposes. The Library also has limited equipment and capability to digitise 3D objects.
You can book the following scanners via the iBooking system.
A book scanner with advanced image processing is available for scanning printed materials with book size up to A3. The scanner is connected to PC iWS17 at i-Space, 4/F North Wing. Please make an advance booking for the book scanner via the iBooking system.
A flatbed scanner for documents up to A4 size is available at the i-Space. The scanner is connected to PC iWS18 at i-Space, 4/F North Wing. Please make an advance booking for the flatbed scanner via the iBooking system.
A self-service large format scanning service is available at the i-Space. Please contact Technical Support Desk at 4/F North Wing if you need to scan the document size between A2 and A0. The scanning charge is $4 per page.
Both handheld and desktop types of 3D scanners are available at i-Space, 4/F North Wing. You can choose the one that suits your needs. The handheld 3D scanner can be checked out at the Self-service Kiosk at i-Space. The desktop 3D scanner located inside the Digital Visualisation Room can be booked via the iBooking system.
Audio and Video Editing
Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) is installed iMac computers and graphic PCs located at 3/F North Wing for you to edit audio and video recordings.
Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
OCR is the process that converts an image of text into a readable text format so that users can enable comprehensive searchability on your document.
CZUR software for the Book Scanner has a build-in OCR feature. It allows you to export OCR text to WORD, EXCEL or searchable PDF format. The CZUR software is installed on PC iWS17 at i-Space.
Adobe Acrobat DC has a built-in OCR feature that recognises most text and allow you to convert image-only PDFs into searchable PDFs. The software is installed on PCs iWS17 and iWS18 at i-Space.
To achieve higher successful rate on OCR, it is recommended that you use 300 dpi resolution for scanning regular texts with font size 8-10 points OCR. For smaller font text sizes less than 8 points, 400-600 dpi resolution should be used. |
