Vision

The Library Extension and Revitalisation (LER) Project aims to extend and refurbish the Library of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), in order to give the PolyU community additional and revitalised library space to cope with the needs of the modern learning environment.

Upon the completion of the project, the Library will be transformed into a modern learning hub that enables new technologies and modes of learning to occur flexibly and collaboratively in support of learning, teaching and research of the University.

Project Overview

The LER project was approved by the Legislative Council in Jul 2020 and is set to be completed by the 4th quarter in 2023. Major construction and revitalisation works include:

  • Construction of an additional floor (6/F) on top of the University Library, providing an extra 2,080 m2 in net operational floor area of library space
  • Revitalisation of the existing floors (G/F to 5/F) of the Library building to improve various facilities and learning spaces, with a total affected area of about 14,600 m2

Key Enhancements

  • New space on the additional top floor, for collaborative learning, quiet study, presentation forum, and information technology (IT) workstation areas;
  • Internal bridges connecting North Wings and South Wings from 3/F to 6/F;
  • A 24-hour learning centre with enhanced facilities;
  • More multi-media learning and production facilities, such as One Button Studio, Digital Studio, etc.;
  • Improved seating capability and capacity;
  • Additional washrooms;
  • Replacement of existing lifts by new models;
  • Improved ventilation system for the whole Library building; and
  • Green and recycled features for energy conservation

Library Services / Measures Implemented during the Project

During the works period, the Library will strive to maintain its regular services. It is inevitable that some facilities and services will be suspended or affected during different stages of the works period. The PolyU community will be kept informed of the progress through various means.

To meet the needs for study space, alternative quiet study space will be made available during the works period. Various measures will be implemented to minimize disruption and inconveniences to Library users:

  • Works will be conducted in phases;
  • Building works of the additional 6/F will be executed by wings. Most works of the Project (except works of the additional 6/F) will be carried out in the summer periods.
  • Major noisy construction works will be restricted to 8:30 am to 11:30 am Mon to Sat during Term Time.
  • All noisy work will be suspended during Revision and Examination Period.
  • Complimentary ear plugs are provided on request at the Library's service counters.
  • Full height hoarding with top and bottom properly sealed will be erected to fence off the construction area to minimize noise and dust.

We thank you for your continuous support as we endeavor to enhance the prospective learning environment for the benefit of the PolyU community.
